Polarised vs Non-Polarised Sunglasses: Which Should You Buy?
Polarised lenses are one of the most popular sunglass upgrades — but are they right for you? Here is what they do and when they help.
What polarised lenses do
Light reflecting off flat surfaces such as roads, water and car bonnets creates harsh glare. Polarised lenses contain a filter that blocks much of this reflected glare, so the world looks clearer and more comfortable.
When polarised lenses help most
- Driving, especially on bright days
- Beaches, lakes and boating
- Snow and mountain trips
- Long hours outdoors
When you might skip them
- Reading some digital screens (polarisation can make them look darker or patchy)
- Situations where you need to read LCD displays clearly
Polarised does not mean UV protection
Polarisation reduces glare; UV protection blocks harmful ultraviolet rays. They are different features — always make sure your sunglasses offer full UV protection, whether polarised or not.
Brands known for great lenses
Maui Jim is built around its PolarizedPlus2 lenses, Oakley is known for Prizm lenses that boost contrast, and Ray-Ban offers many classic styles with polarised options.
